What is digital printing? Digital printing options.

Digital printing is one of the technologies that has caused a lot of confusion among people who are not familiar with printing.

Digital printing is not in itself a specific type of printing technology in the sense of how designs are printed on material. Digital printing brings together a range of technologies whose main difference from traditional printing is the absence of a printing plate. Another feature is the ability to use variable data in printing. The decline in print runs is a phenomenon common to all parts of polygraphy. The number of titles increases and the number of prints decreases. All of this requires flexibility and dynamism in the production of publications. There is a need to deliver the same material with small changes to different consumers. Small print runs are a feature of books and even of labels.

History of didactics

The widespread use of computers in the printing industry has made it possible to solve a great many problems that were previously unsolvable. However, the need to produce photographic forms for printing remained. From 1993 onwards, many companies started to produce equipment that made it possible to transfer information from the computer directly to the output device – the printing machine. This year is considered the beginning of digital printing. All this was made possible by the creation of the new computer language in 1985.

Definition of digital printing

The terminology of digital printing has not yet settled down. As a result, different authors use the term in a narrower or broader sense. Digital printing covers a range of different technologies based on different physical and chemical processes. It is difficult to group them under a single term. This is why terms such as:

Contactless printing
Computer printing
Digital printing

In most cases, however, the term digital printing is used. In this context, digital printing refers to a printing technology that produces information in a discrete format. There is usually no traditional printing format. A controversial issue is whether digital printing can include devices where the printing forms are produced directly in the printing machine using information from computers. This is the integration of pre-press processes with the printing press. This technology is currently used on offset machines as well as on printing machines using risography.
